One of the many benefits of running for kids is that it’s a sport that doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment. Just about the only gear that kids really need for running is shoes. For clothes, they can run in any comfortable, not-too-bulky clothes that are suitable for physical activity.
When shopping for running shoes for kids, start at a specialty running store if you can. Even if you don’t end up finding the right shoes there, you’ll get some good advice on your child’s foot and running gait. Then you’ll have a better idea of what to look for if you’re shopping online or at another store.
What to Look for in Kids Running Shoes
Make sure that you choose a shoe that’s designed for running. For example, kids won’t run as fast or comfortably in high-top basketball shoes as they will in lighter, flexible running shoes.
Look for shoes that are supportive, well-cushioned, and have a good fit. You’ll want to err on the side of a slightly bigger shoe vs. a snug fit, since your child’s feet may swell when running, especially in warmer weather.
Kids running shoes should be made from flexible materials that provide the necessary support without restricting movement. Opt for materials that allow for proper air circulation to keep your child’s feet cool and comfortable during long runs.
Additionally, look for shoes that are made from durable materials to withstand the wear and tear of regular use.
Here are some other tips to keep in mind when shopping for running shoes for kids:
- Try on the shoe for fit and comfort. Don’t just buy the same make and model that your child has previously worn, in a bigger size. Have him run in the shoes in the store to see how they feel.
- Avoid choosing kids’ running shoes based on looks. This can be really tough when shopping for shoes with kids because they usually want shoes with a cool color or look. But if it doesn’t fit, isn’t durable, or isn’t the right type of shoe for running, it’s a waste of money and could lead to issues, possibly injuries.
- Replace running shoes frequently, about every four to six months. If your kid has a growth spurt, you may have to replace shoes even earlier. Check their shoes frequently to see if their toes are pushing right up against the end of the shoe. Too-tight shoes may lead to foot blisters, black toenails, or other issues.

What age can kids start running races?
Kids under five years old are a little young to participate in a formal running program or races. At that age, kids may not understand the concept of running a race and may be confused or a bit scared about participating. One bad experience might turn them off from running for years.
If your child is very interested in running, kindergarten is a good time to find a kids’ running program or have them participate in a local kids’ race. Before then, they can play running games and just enjoy running for the fun of it, not to compete.
How can I find running races for kids?
If your child is interested in running races, do some research to see if your local community or kid’s school offers a youth track team or kids’ running club or program. They may be able to participate in track meets or cross country races through the team.
Many local 5K races are open to kids as young as 8 years old, if your child is interested in running that distance. Some 5Ks or other races also include a much shorter kids’ race either before or after the main event. Race organizers often have kids’ races of various lengths, depending on the kids’ ages.
