Where I live, the temperatures are starting to drop just a bit and I can already feel that cool, crisp Fall weather starting to arrive. Fall has always been my favorite time of year to run and, whether I’m running around my neighborhood or on a local trail, I love taking in all the sights, smells, and sounds of the season.
Of course, Fall running brings its own set of challenges, one of which is choosing the right running clothes for unpredictable weather. The weather can be warm, cool, windy, or wet, and sometimes even quickly change mid-run. The key to staying comfortable during Fall weather is wearing versatile clothes that are protective but also breathable and not bulky.
Here, check out some of my favorite Fall running essentials that will keep you feeling ready for anything during Fall runs.
Laureate 3-Pocket Capris
Capris are perfect for that in-between Fall weather when it’s too cold for shorts, but too warm to wear full-length tights. These super affordable and butter-soft capris are a fantastic option for running, as well as other workouts, or just lounging. With a high waist and four-way stretch fabric, they offer excellent coverage, range of motion, and overall comfort.
I usually run with my phone, so I appreciate the roomy side pockets, which are ideal for stashing it. During my runs, my phone stays securely in the pocket, with no bounce whatsoever. I also squat-tested these capris and I found the coverage to be exceptional. And thanks to the budget-friendly price, I can pick up a few pairs (in different colors) for the same price I would pay for similar capris at a high-end retailer. That way, if one pair is in the laundry pile, I have a back-up ready to go!
Front Quilted Thermal Jacket
Another versatile piece for Fall running, this jacket offers the right amount of protection for cold and windy runs. It’s made with a soft, brushed fleece that’s warm, but also breathable and moisture-wicking. A quilted panel on the front offers more protection.
The fit is not too constricting, so it’s easy to move in and ideal for layering. I love that I can wear a short sleeve or tank underneath for cool weather and a long sleeve if it’s very cold and windy. The front zipper makes it super easy to regulate my temperature by zipping it up or down.
Although it’s perfect for running, I also love that this jacket doesn’t look overly sporty, so it can easily work for casual wear, too. Plus, the jacket has one of my favorite features: Thumbholes! I love that using the thumbholes provides a little protection during a chilly run, but then it’s easy to slide your hand out of them once you warm up.
Additionally, the jacket has two hand zippered pockets, which are ideal for stashing your phone or gloves. I also like that it comes in a few different fun colors, not just your basic black or white. This jacket is also very packable, making it easy to take along on Fall weekend getaways. And while a quality running jacket is usually a splurge-worthy item, this one is surprisingly affordable.
UPF 50+ Crew Neck Sun Shirt
Perfect for Fall running, this long-sleeved shirt is extremely soft, comfortable, and just the right weight for the cool weather. It offers a relaxed fit and can be worn alone as a layering piece.
The soft, smooth fabric has UPF 50+ protection, so it keeps you shielded on those Fall days when the sun’s rays are still really strong. I also love the shirt’s wicking capabilities, which helps keep me dry once I start sweating. Even better, it’s very affordable and comes in more than a dozen different colors and a wide range of sizes.
